Fire Retardant Foam
Class A Foam
Foam Fire Defense recommends Phos-Chek WD881 foam concentrate for use in all Aegis CAFS products. The WD881 foam has a long and successful field deployment history and has been used by government agencies around the world who are responsible for municipal and wildland fire management. It has been tested and approved for use by the U.S. Forest Service for corrosion properties and has successfully passed environmental, safety and health testing.
Phos-Chek WD881 has also been tested by Underwriters Laboratory and is a UL listed "Wetting Agent", tested on Class A and Class B combustibles. WD881 is significantly more concentrated than many other foam products currently available.
Class A Fire Retardant Foam applied on a tree.Phos-Chek Class A foam concentrates are specifically formulated to make water more effective. The unique combination of surfactants significantly reduce water's surface tension, creating a superior foam blanket when mixed with nitrogen. The foam surrounds fuels with a thick layer of water suspended in a foam state creating a barrier between the fuel and the fire. It also knocks down fire faster than water alone when applied directly to flames because of the greater volume of water applied in foam trapped as bubbles. Water bubbles convert to steam faster than droplets of water thereby cooling a fire rapidly below its ignition point. Also, foam penetrates live, dead and charred fuels where water bounces off fuels and falls to the ground.
Remember, it's not the solid fuel that burns, but the vapors released from it. Foam can spread out over a large area, blanketing combustible vapors and absorbing substantial amounts of energy (BTUs) released from the fire, delivering even greater effectiveness advantages over plain water.
